Female Hair Loss – You Don’t Have to Hide

by Dr. Larissa Bradford, M.D.

Many women call my office embarrassed to reveal that they are inexplicably losing their hair. They feel as though this is problem that no other woman has and if it does happen, it should only happen at very late stages in life.  These misconceptions are certainly not true. About one-third of the American female population will experience hair loss, although it is a common side effect of menopause, it can occur in younger women in their twenties or thirties as well.

Some women are genetically predisposed to hair loss, known as androgenetic alopecia (AGA.) This form of hair loss presents as thinning near the front of the head or the middle of the scalp.  Another condition, known as telogen effluvium, is the non-localized, sudden and uncharacteristic loss of hair. This hair loss occurs in clumps and may fall out of your head or even your eyebrows – the darker your hair, the more extreme the loss may seem.

Hair loss of both types can be a result of many factors, while genetics may play a starring role in AGA, the age of onset can be affected by lifestyle choices such as diet, stress levels, hormone imbalances and more. Taking care to ensure your hormone levels are in check, managing stress effectively and consuming a balanced diet are all ways to manage your hair loss.

In young women, nutrient deficiencies from skipping meals or fad diets can cause hair loss. In my practice, we now off a very thorough nutrient lab panel, giving us the ability to pinpoint nutrient deficiencies and help you make the adjustments to your diet to accommodate inadequacies or toxicity.

The most important thing is for women to know they are not alone when it comes to female hair loss and there are many treatment options available – many which can stop or even reverse hair loss – all you have to do is ask.
