Let’s Talk About: Night Sweats

Hi there, Stefani here! It’s getting hot and steamy outside here in Florida, so the air conditioning is up and running pretty much full time right now. Does that mean my night sweats are from the rising temps outside – probably not, unfortunately! We are talking full on, sleep-stealing, night sweating here!

What are night sweats anyway? If you’re in the throes of menopause, or even just beginning your journey, night sweats may be one of your most annoying symptoms. Who wants their sleep interrupted and their PJs soaked by the end of the night anyway? Hormonal changes affect different body regulators – in this case, the hypothalamus is the sucker. Your hypothalamus, tucked away in your brain, regulates body temperature, and when it’s thrown off, forget feeling any sort of relief.

So, what to do? There are many ways to treat and alleviate night sweat symptoms. First, target sweaty triggers and then avoid, avert, and abolish! These triggers can be everything from too many blankets on your bed to keeping your windows open when it’s too hot. Eating spicy food doesn’t help, and neither does drinking hot liquids, alcohol, or caffiene. Stress, of course, is a huge trigger!

Of course, I can’t talk about menopause symptoms without mentioning bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. If your hormones are off, replacing them with natural hormones makes complete sense. Of course, you need to work with a competent doc who can monitor your hormone levels accurately. If you’re not feeling relief from sleeping in your skivvies or drinking ice water while standing in front of your AC vent, than it’s definitely worth a new approach!
