Spring Cleaning that Lasts

By Kenneth Orbeck, D.O.

As the winter months are fading away and spring arriving just around the corner, many of us begin to think of spring cleaning – and I’m not talking about finally cleaning out that closet at the end of the hall. This year, vow to cleanse your body, not just your home.

It is likely that along with dusting dirt from the mantle, you have considered taking up a new physical activity and looked into the latest fad diet – who doesn’t think of dropping a few pounds for the swimsuit season?  But what if this year, you really cleanse your body, so that the outside and inside are sparkling, beautiful?

Weight control is a complex and difficult issue – it is one of the most common complaints I see in my metabolic and functional medical practice. Over 120 million Americans are overweight or obese. There are projections that over 75 percent of adults will be overweight within the next 2 to 3 years. Obesity is a major risk factor of 35 major diseases. There is also a direct and indirect cost of obesity which includes necessary medical services and loss of productivity. These account for over $100 billion a year in the American budget. Poor weight management contributes to a host of adverse health issues, including allergies, hormone imbalance, improper functioning of neurotransmitters, detoxification and inflammation issues, sleep deprivation and, of course, chronic disease.

This year, instead of taking the “quick and easy” route to temporary weight loss, make some real changes for your health and your appearance.  To truly “spring clean,” you have to give yourself a fresh start by testing your hormones, correcting any imbalances and cleansing from the inside with a medically-supervised detox. These initial steps will make your diet and exercise habits more effective and prepare you for healthy, lifelong weight management.
