Why Saliva? Lab Testing Options for Hormone Imbalance
When it comes to hormone testing, there are so many different methods for assessing each hormone. Saliva is a common testing method, but many people don’t understand why saliva testing is the choice of most physicians.
Unlike serum testing, saliva gives the practitioner the opportunity to measure levels, particularly cortisol levels, throughout the entire day. A typical test kit will include four saliva tubes and instructions to collect a sample in the morning, mid-afternoon, evening and right before bed. Collecting these samples at various times can help your physician observe the peaks and valleys in your hormone levels and the function of your adrenal glands. With serum testing, your physician is only able to observe your hormone level at that one point in time – which doesn’t say much.
